We find out if it's a boy or a girl on October 15th. We've got a boy and a girl name all picked out but I'm still open to ideas. If you could name a boy or a girl right now, what name would you pick?

Reader Comments (60)

Atticus for a boy (We have a Declan and an Aengus so we'd need a strong boy name if we had another son) and Clara for a girl.

In homage to To Kill A Mockingbird I always loved the name Radley for a boy or a girl. "Imagine!" I said to Serge. "Having 'Rad' as a nickname!" Serge, unfortunately, used his veto power on that one.

September 30, 2013 | Registered CommenterMonica

Virginia, Xenia (eck-Zen-ya) or Anna

George, John, Rory, or David

I'd have to meet them first though.

September 30, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterBakingSuit

I like Radley! It's much better than Grizzly which is the first name my husband wants to give a future son. Our last name is Baragar (pronounced Bear-a-ger)....ya I had to veto that one...though the debate is still open for it as a middle name lol.

Violet and Henry are both classic names...I would stick with that same vibe.
Maybe Charlie or William for a boy, and maybe Deliliah or Sophia for a girl?

September 30, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterMandy

If I had a girl now I would lean toward Maisey. Always loved the name Spencer and Alasdair for boys.

September 30, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterJessie

Oh I think Adelaide would be a beautiful girls name too!

September 30, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterMandy

I love Sebastian for a boy and Clare or Alice for a girl.

September 30, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterSharon

@Mandy - Grizzly Barager! I laughed. I like Delilah but Serge doesn't.

September 30, 2013 | Registered CommenterMonica

Oh I recently met a woman with a beautiful little baby girl named Adeline and I loved that name. It rhymes with Caroline, not Josephine. I would probably pick that name if I were having a baby girl now. As for boys names? Ugh, I could never decide on any I liked that weren't too popular, but I'm big on old people names. Harold? Stanley? Norman? Just kidding. Actually, I kinda like Stanley.

September 30, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterVictoria

I love Ciara and Maggie :)

September 30, 2013 | Unregistered Commentercmbrown3

Girl: Janina. (pronounced JANina, not JaNINA)
Boy: Jordan

I always think the # of syllables in a first name should NOT be the same as the number in the surname. Not hard for you folks with 4 syllables in the last name!! My last name has 2 syllables so it was a little trickier. Chose first names that are one syllable.

Enjoy this fun process.

We named our daughter Tegan, (after the older ones vetoed my idea of "Kelly") seems to suit her and there's not too many out there,

September 30, 2013 | Unregistered Commentercathy

@Victoria - I love the name Josephine. JoJo Bielanko!

September 30, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterThe Girl Who...

I'm due with our first baby, a boy, in December. We are trying to decide between Charles (Charlie) and Henry. If it ha been a girl my favorite name is Eliza! She sounds so spunky!

September 30, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterRachel

Not to change the subject, but you look like a pregnant teenager... this is meant to be taken as a compliment, I think pregnancy makes you look young and blissful :)

September 30, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterBonnieLee

we briefly considered everleigh for our sweet girl, but ultimately went with our first pick, presley.
if we'd had a boy, he would have been either hud or booker.

September 30, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterSandi

Jacob or William for a boy and Sarah or Olivia for a girl.

September 30, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterSarah

Azalea (like the flower) for a girl and Casey for a boy. Side note, you look fantastic so I'm guessing you're having a boy.

September 30, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterJulie

I know you are planning on naming your child Sunny - whether it's a boy or a girl. But other options, what I would name a kid if I had a new one that needed a name, would be Tanner if a boy or Frankie for a girl.
and you are sooo adorable pregnant!

September 30, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterSunny

One of my boys favorite books is The Boxcar Children, two of the kids are Henry and Violet in the story, so you must choose Benny or Jessie for you child to be. (they are a family of 4) If you are not a huge Gertrude Chandler Warner fan, I would stick with traditional classic names to match your other two. I love Charles, James, Benjamin, Oliver. Girls I have always loved Josephine, Lydia, Katherine, Eleanor, and Lucy. I know you do not think pregnancy agrees with you, but honestly, you look fantastic!

September 30, 2013 | Unregistered Commentermarybeth

I'm due in early March also and was really lobbying for Silas for a boy (I have a Zachary and an Isaiah already, I thought they sounded nice together). This baby is a girl, which I'm thrilled about but completely clueless on a name.

September 30, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterMorgan

I've always looooved the name Olive for a little girl. I mean, it just doesn't get any cuter than that, does it? I also love Maggie.

Boy names are hard. Owen is cute, but probably too popular. I like Nicolas and Greyson (Grey).

And I agree: you look amazing!!

September 30, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterKate

@Marybeth - The BoxCar Children is one of my all-time faves! I only realized I AFTER naming Henry that I had scored two out of the four kids.

@Morgan - Serge liked Silas for a boy but we like another name better. All the girl names I love that he vetoed: Clementine, Annabel, Vivian, Vivienne, Ruby, Eleanor, Delilah and Olive. Maybe that helps?

September 30, 2013 | Registered CommenterMonica

I overheard a mother addressing her daughter as Ashton, which I thought was a boys name but oddly I immediately liked it for a little girl. And for a boys name I'm partial to Jacob.

September 30, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterJuli

I have a Lola and a Toby. My other favourites are Harriet and Frances (Frankie) for girls, Hugo and Louis for boys. I think any of those names would work well with Violet and Henry. Hope your pregnancy continues to go well!

September 30, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterSteph

For a girl, Isabel----for a boy, Shane.

September 30, 2013 | Unregistered Commenterkaren

We are having a Ruby i November. The other girl contenders were Scarlett, Anabelle, Marion, Ariel, Coco, Cosette, Heidi, Isolde, Madeline, Coco, Paloma. For a boy: Robin, Vincent or Ariel.

September 30, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterKristin

For a girl: Edna.
For a boy: Edna.

September 30, 2013 | Unregistered Commenterserge

I have a 10 week old baby girl called Elodie.

September 30, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterSophie

I am in love with the name Gloria. I think it's classic but not common. It also has an awesome Van Morrison song that comes with it.

September 30, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterAmanda

Ooh I love Gloria and van Morrison- my personal fav is Cecelia- Simon and Garfunkel. Would you do another flower name for a girl? Daisy, Heather, Rose, Delphine, Poppy. Boy names I like, Edward, George, Nicholas, Victor, Charles, David. What is the origin of Serge?

September 30, 2013 | Unregistered Commentercora

@cora - Serge is also Serge's dad's name who is from France. Cecilia was a top contender of ours for a while. Serge proposed it when we were naming Violet and I really like it.

September 30, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterThe Girl Who...

I love Mabel, Calliope, Grier, and Piper for a girl and Anderson, August, Oliver and Graham for a boy :)

September 30, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterKali

We didn't find out. Evelyn was the girl name. I like Evie for short. We have a little 2 month old dude named Tristan. Names are tricky, good luck!!

September 30, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterMartha

I know this isn't what you are asking but you look beautiful in this photo!

October 1, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterRichelle

Mairin for a girl, Max for a boy

October 1, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterSH

We have a Maren and a Deklan. If we would have ended up with two girls, we were seriously considering Amanda Geraldine (Geraldine was my grandma's name). I also was gunning for Radek for a boy - because you would never mess with a guy named RADEK, would you?! Badass! I still love that name... But that wouldn't really jive with your other two traditional names. (but, then again, they're only all going to be together in one household for 15 years or so and then they take their names away with them... which is what I keep telling myself since we ended up choosing names with the same ending and that kind of bugs me...)

October 1, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterSara

@SH - Max is one of our all-time favorite names but it might be a little weird naming our kid after our dog...

@Sara - Anyone that messes with a dude named Radek is just asking for trouble.

October 1, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterThe Girl Who...

Hah - whoops!

My second favorite boy's name is Mark. Strong, one syllable, don't know a lot of them (and I don't think you have a pet with this name....)

October 1, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterSH

Love Deliliah for a girl and my boys are Waylon & Wyatt, was almost a Willy :) but Wyatt won out!

October 1, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterTR

I loved the name Elliot for a boy or a girl while I was pregnant (both times) but my husband used the power of Veto so now we have an Eliza and an Angus - both of which (and whom!) I love. The wonderful thing about naming babies is how they grow to become the names you give them.

October 1, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterSue

What about Viggo for a boy? I can't think of a good girl name right now.

October 1, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterErika

I love Josephine too but prefer Josie over JoJo since it ryhmes with your last name.

For boys, some classic names that aren't too trendy:
Vincent (Vinnie or Vince)
Alfred (I love Freddie)
Martin ( I love Marty)
Walter (Wally or Walt)

October 1, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterKate

I'm expecting a little girl at the end of January and I think I'm going with Florence Lyra. Maybe Florrie for short. Although my 6 year old Evan is convinced a baby eagle is going to fly out in which case he gets to name her and he picked the name fluffy!

October 1, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterCat Small

For girls I like Althea, Georgia, Edie, and Leonor (LAY-uh-nor) (though the last two seem unfair, as they'd always be called Eddie and Lenore)
For boys I like Silas too, and Micah and Wyatt.

Oh, and I was named after the dog, and I turned out fine -- go with Max if you like it!

October 1, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterSusannah

I seriously had a dream last night that I was calling the baby Lillian Lucille. I was looking at her and saying "Lillian Lucille"

October 1, 2013 | Unregistered Commentermama

For a boy: Serge.
For a girl: Monica.
For a girl: Serge

October 1, 2013 | Unregistered Commenterserge

Names that we loved but couldn't agree on (ok, so maybe someone didn't love them, but I did so who is counting) for our daughter and son: Adeline, Ruby, Jane - as a middle, Opal, Scarlett, Evangeline are the ones off hand for girls. For boys, we adopted and thus did not know race so that is the reason for a lot of the Latino inclusions: Knox, Stone, Micha, River, Buie, William, Gaell, Micael, Cade, and I am forgetting so many. Wish we could have one more just so I could chose again, ours are London Claire (last name) and Asher William Wyatt (last name). I loved Ashe as a middle name so much we bumped it up to be the middle.

October 1, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterAlison

I second Edna!!
Oooh that reminds me of a great name for a girl -- Edie (EE-DEE) like how Edie Brickell pronounces her name.
Man I love that name.

October 1, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterLaura

Oct 15th! That's exciting. In 12 days you'll know! WOW! okay, I guess once again, I suggest you name the baby a combination name such as Sonica Merge or Sir Madison Gerge, Sonny Minerga.

.But If it were me, I would name her Ivy Ramona or Ivy Clementine, Ivy Elizabeth.... A storybook name. And if it were a boy, Vincent Jackson ( VInson) or Jack Ramone ( Jackie Mone or Jackie Ray) for short.. Nicknames are important. My dad always called my mother Jack, Meelie or Meal for short. Anyway, Whatever the name, your child will be PERFECT for it!!! So excited for you! and I love your haircolor. You look like Elizabeth Shue now. :)
