More Than Halfway To Dead

Planning a surprise 40th birthday party for Serge has taken up most of my brain space for the past two weeks. That's not to say I've only been planning the party for two weeks, but I had to really kick things up a notch this last little while and, man, it's been like a full-time job. Plotting to get Serge out of the house for three hours so that I could set up the party and welcome guests bordered on a military operation.

It worked. People traveled from Florida, New York City, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh - from all over! - to huddle closely with each other in our dining room while we waited to surprise Serge.

He was surprised! And this surprised me.

When you're planning a party and making up lies and excuses to someone to explain your strange actions you are certain that they must be aware that something is up. They may think you're having an affair and not planning a super cool surprise party for them but your guilt makes you certain they know some kind of shenanigans are underway. You worry that they realize you're planning a party and have decided to pretend like they don't know what's going on to make you feel better about the party you're planning. Which means the surprise is more about you and not the guest of honor. And yet, while I felt like the fact that I was planning a surprise party was as obvious as the zit that won't leave my chin, Serge suspected nothing.

Everyone should have a surprise party at least once in their life.

Now that the party is over I feel like I'll have hours and hours of free time on my hands. What will I do with myself now that I won't be making lists, counting guests, recounting guests, planning what foods to buy, looking into the cost of renting an extra cocktail table, talking myself out of renting a cocktail table, deciding a cocktail table is desperately needed, talking myself out of renting a cocktail table and shopping at Walmart for party supplies?

Serge's actual birthday is today. He's 40 years old. Which apparently means he's more than halfway to dead, as he said to me the other day: "There's no way I'm making 80-years-old so life is more than halfway over." What a ray of sunshine, no?

So yeah. I just wanted to tell the old boy happy birthday. I kind of like having him around. Especially because he gets up early with the kids every morning, embarks on various home improvement projects, takes the dogs out, drives the recycling to the place where you recycle (because that's how it's done in the country) and writes cool stuff.

He even chops down Christmas trees - RAAAWWR. He'll do.

Happy 40th, Serge!
