Goodbye To All That

P.S. - Sorry about the saggy mom boobs. Wasn't thinking about that at the time...

That took guts! Thanks for sharing ths video.
I imagine it's liberating and freeing.

How do you feel about it now?
Any regrets?

I love the whole, "Now what?" as you're holding the ponytail in your hands! You got brass ones, Monica, and I dig it!

January 2, 2012 | Unregistered Commenteryotko

You look fantastic! It's good to have some random kick ass, punk rock moments now and again!!! ;-)

Love it, but from someone with really fine hair, I can't believe how MUCH hair you have. I think it looks great short, though.

January 2, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterDi

Awesome! Good for you. Thanks for the realness of that, your deliberating and working up your nerve and saggy boobs (which look pretty fantastic to me) and all!

January 2, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterLindsay

new year, new hair. love it!

January 2, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterErin

I don't know why, but this was fascinating to watch. I think this moment is about much more than hair . . .perhaps?

January 2, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterBonnie

Moments like that are so exhilarating. You look fantastic with shorter hair.

January 2, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterStacey

LOVE this. Fresh start for a new year - I think it looks gorgeous!

January 2, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterKate

The sawing it took to get through those strands. My fine hair would have taken one snip. That was fierce.

January 2, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterWendy P.

Fucking Awesome. You rock.

January 2, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterKristen

Good for you! I wonder, can you donate that ponytail? That would rock. I would suggest going to someone to have it evened out and styled- there are a lot of cute medium length cuts these days.

Yikes! That even made ME a little nervous. It looks good though. Do you regret it or are you glad you did it? I'm a bit curious as to the reaction of Serge and the Little Ones.

January 2, 2012 | Unregistered Commenterkimtisha

That video kind of reminded me of Paranormal Activity. I was half-expecting Henry to float by in the mirror.

That took major balls...I'm sure you will rock the shorter hair & look sexy as hell. Would love to see a picture once it's all shaped & styled.

January 2, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterChrissyD

I'm jealous! You just cut off more hair than I've ever grown in my life! I've got fine blond Swedish hair. Looked like a bald little boy all my childhood! Used to turn green from all the swim team practices/chlorine!

Your hair looks good though. I think you'll need less shampoo and shower time now!

January 2, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterBill

you are beautiful short, long, it makes no difference...I DO remember that friend of yours whose mom said that to you...about guys looking at long haired girls first. If I remember she was sort of an idiot!!! that was amazing and gutsy girl, made me nervous watrching. Now I want to see serge and the kids reaction. You are beautiful Monica.....

January 3, 2012 | Unregistered Commentermama

Can I just comment on your arms? Nice guns! You are so much more than your hair, your mom boobs and your shapely arms! Thanks for sharing this moment.

January 3, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterAli

I did this too once. I had long hair down to the center of my back and one day had it hacked off. I never went back.
You have such nice thick hair. I think you look great either way. Honestly!

January 3, 2012 | Unregistered Commenteramy s (OH)

I loved the sound in this video. Quiet house, baby ooogs and uffs, a clock(?) ticking. The scissors crunching through all that hair!

Beautiful. Boom.

January 3, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterAlexandra

I wanted to hug you so many times during that video, you are super brave doing that....can't wait to see pictures, I'm sure you look amazing:)

January 3, 2012 | Unregistered Commenterkacy

This was so hilariously melodramatic. It's....just hair?

January 3, 2012 | Unregistered Commenterleo

Leo, I think that's kind of the point. It IS just hair yet society makes such a big deal about women's hair and a lot of women fall into the trap of being all caught up in their hair or, like Monica says, defining themselves or whether or not they look good based on their hair. The video is a fuck you to all that. She's defined herself by her hair her entire life and now she's reminding herself that yes, it is just hair.

January 3, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterSarah

"Mom boobs"? Um, they are really cute. I would give anything to have those back. Just you wait m'dear, they will be replaced with, oh, sort of these pancake-like SLABS that poke off to the sides...or maybe by BOWLING PINS hanging far far down your never know. You are a very adorable person so no apologies for anything. Keep your spirits up and the rest of you will follow! XOXO

The hair does NOT make the woman!!!

Very Brave...

January 3, 2012 | Unregistered Commenterchris

Whoohooo! That was badass and brave! Good for you! I love the new length on you; it's much more modern.

Like you, I had long hair my entire life and yes, it started to define me. Recently I cut it short, as in pixie. And it is LIBERATING as hell!!

January 3, 2012 | Unregistered Commenterkate

Monica, your self-portrait is beautiful

January 3, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterKaren

So awesome! I agree with the commenter who loved the sounds - so cute hearing Henry while you were in the midst of such a big change! You look terrific - the new look really showcases your beautiful face. Even if you grow your hair back, it will be healthy and radiant, and you will have this empowering experience under your belt. V. exciting!

January 3, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterCB

Love it. And yeah - badass. I love the next blog self-portrait. Would that my hair would do that, but it's too fine and straight. We always want what we don't have, right? I've finally grown mine as long as it's been since I was a little girl and was loving it. You wrote something that emanated for me about feeling sexy bc of your hair. I realize I get that feeling from my hair, too. So maybe it's time I cut mine - I just don't think I have the cahones just yet.

January 3, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterPamH

This took some serious lady balls. Good for you. I too, defined myself by my long blonde tresses. I now have short black hair with a blue streak in front and I love it.

January 3, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterCB

I say cut it all off! Go for a pixie cut. You'd look super cute and it's easy to style.

January 4, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterDearWendy

there were parts - parts where I forgot to breathe.

January 4, 2012 | Unregistered Commentercharlie

amazing and brave - tough nut Monica

January 6, 2012 | Unregistered Commenterslange

The house fire and you cutting all your hair off...not connected are they!

January 9, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterDan

That was so wonderful to watch, and so painful as well. Having done exactly the same thing as you on a few occasions, I know just what must have been going through your head while you were standing there.

So brave!
